Why Is It Called Bucktown?
The name comes from the goats — "bucks" — that 19th-century Polish immigrant families kept in the area, once known as Kozie Prery, or Goat Prairie. German settlers founded the town of Holstein here in 1854, which Chicago annexed in 1863; you'll still see the name in Holstein Park. Polish, German, and later Latino families shaped the neighborhood for more than a century before artists, and then new construction, transformed it beginning in the 1980s and '90s.

What It's Like to Live in Bucktown
Residential Streets, Lively Corridors

Food and Drink
Longtime neighborhood favorites include Le Bouchon, a classic French bistro on Damen, and Irazu, the Costa Rican spot on Milwaukee. Newer arrivals near the 606 and Western Avenue, like Wolf & Company, have added a café, butcher, and market with direct trail access.
Parks and Events
Holstein Park on Oakley Avenue has a pool, fieldhouse, and playground, and Churchill Field Park sits along the 606. The neighborhood's signature event, the Bucktown Arts Fest, takes over the Oakley Avenue area each August with artists, music, and food.
Types of Homes in Bucktown
- Single-family homes: from restored vintage homes to newer construction on wider lots — a large share of the neighborhood's sales and the main driver of its high median price.
- Workers' cottages and two-flats: historic housing stock, often renovated, expanded, or deconverted to single-family use.
- Townhomes and condos: newer construction and vintage conversions, offering a lower entry price. If you're financing a condo, review the association's finances — new Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reserve rules take effect in January 2027.
- Lofts: converted industrial and commercial buildings, especially toward the Kennedy and Milwaukee Avenue.
