Living in the Ukrainian Village Chicago Neighborhood

The charming tree-lined streets of Ukrainian Village radiate with city life.

Ukrainian Village is a West Town neighborhood on Chicago's Near West Side, known for its onion-domed churches, tree-lined streets of vintage two-flats and cottages, and Chicago Avenue's restaurants and shops. It sits in the 60622 zip code, directly west of its neighbor East Village. The two share Chicago Avenue as a main street and are often shopped together by buyers, so this page covers both.

Our team works in Ukrainian Village and East Village every week. This page pulls together current market numbers for both neighborhoods, how they compare, our living guide and live listings.

Source: MRED closed sales, October 2025 to October 2026. Single-family homes are left out of this comparison because too few sold (5 in Ukrainian Village, 6 in East Village) for a reliable median.

What the numbers show: the overall medians are nearly identical, but that hides a real difference. Bedroom for bedroom, East Village condos sold for about 10% more, and about 15% more per square foot. Ukrainian Village has a larger share of two-flats and multi-unit buildings, and much of it falls within the city's Ukrainian Village Landmark District, which limits demolition and new construction. For buyers, that usually means a more vintage, residential feel in Ukrainian Village and more condo inventory to choose from in East Village.

Types of homes

Vintage two-flats and three-flats are the classic Ukrainian Village building, popular with owner-occupants who want rental income. Worker's cottages and frame houses line the side streets, many inside the landmark district, where exterior changes need city review. Condos, from vintage conversions to newer buildings, make up most sales in both neighborhoods and nearly all of East Village's.

Getting around

The Blue Line's Division station sits at the northeast corner of East Village, about 10 minutes from the Loop. Buses run along Chicago Avenue, Division, Damen, Western and Ashland, and the Kennedy Expressway is a few minutes east. Street parking is tight on many blocks; our living guide covers permit zones.
